Where has the heat gone

So last weekend I spent Sunday (2nd June) planting out my beans, courgettes, sweetcorn lettuce etc., spent so much time outside i sunburn the back of my neck!

This weekend here on the East cost we are back to struggling double figure (12 max today), its cloudy and just generally miserable, and i am a little concerned over the sweetcorn - might of been to early oh well.

But it is strange to see what plants are doing well, my Garlic is looking brilliant for the first time ever, and the mange-touts are all in flower.  Kale and chard doing fine as usual, carrots, leeks, spring onions all slow and beetroots are really struggling, but my swedes and currant bushes seem to be loving the cooler weather.

I also have loots of tomato, cucumber and pepper plants in the greenhouse that seem to be growing slower than usual, but that's not such a bad thing because I really don't want them outside yet.

Anyway the Allums are out and looking lovely, so i can at least enjoy them while scrapping the aphids off my currents and raspberries (shame the colder weather hasn't effected their numbers).

  1. Same here with the sweetcorn - they looked great when they went out last week but now they're yellow and weedy. That damned north wind just won't stop!
