Chick or Duck

I have a area near my shed that i am thinking of turning into a poultry home.  The area is rough 6ft long by 3ft wide and has in the past just had some ornamental grasses on from previous owner.  They have now gone, but the area is north facing and in shade by both shed and my house, but would be good for a couple of birds i think.

The question is Hens or Indian Runner Ducks, i have heard delightful and horror stories about both, and having read a couple of books from public library am swaying towards the duck ( must say i prefer ducks!) but i would be interested to hear any experience duck or hens keepers opinion on the matter.

Though the birds will be pets, I would like to have egg layers, but my main questions are

  • Is the area big enough - they will have access to full garden when I am home.

  • Destructive power of either species

  • Temperament and noise

I am going to the Edible garden show in a couple weeks and hoping there may be some experts there too, because as much as i love a book talking to people is always the better option.

  1. Heya,I have chickens at the moment. I cannot give you much advice as I just came into it and have been around them a week or so only! But I will tell you that these hens are some characters. They are more likable than one would think. They quickly learn to recognise your voice and will run to you, and not just when you have food. They are quite amusing to watch around my dog and cats as well.
I don't know about letting either duck or chickens into your actual garden as they will probably chop it up, dig it up and make a mess out of it.
