End of one year, straight into the next
So here we are, 11 days into 2015, and I am just getting into the starting phase. I kept a record of expenditure and harvest last year and i have done my tallies. As this was the first time I done this I used general supermarket prices, not organic which maybe I should of.
Expenditure total £263.11 Harvest total £159. 59
So I spent £105.52 last year, not bad considering I use a lot of pots to grow stuff. I am going to do this again this year, but may use organic\finest prices for veg and I will try to weigh all harvest, try being the word as I would love to know what amount of raspberries, toms, peas, strawberries and phylasis didn't make it into my kitchen before being eaten.
The winners of 2014 for me was, enviromesh love it, had caterpillar free cabbages this year yah! Parsnips, raspberries, Cox's apples, beetroot and red basil were brilliant this year.
The not so good, carrots, main crop potatoes (what survived the blight were watery and tasteless), runner beans, the beans were fine but my frame came down in the wind breaking some of the vines so I need to do better this year.
The bad, corn failed to pollinate, gerkins 3 sowings and nothing and purple majesty spuds - not tasty.
Well that's the end of one year, and plan is drawn for this year so happy gardening all

I must admit that I eat lots of my peas and strawberries at the allotment too..lol..:P
ReplyDeleteMy success last year, after many years of trying, was carrots. I had just got my new allotment and I was determined to make a carrot friendly raised bed. I went a bit mad and got several large bags of john innes no 3 along with some verve compost. I filled the carrot bed with the mix and 'went for it'...lol..I got amazing onions, carrots, beetroot and parsnips. They were so good I got several first prizes in the allotment show. I'm just planning things for this year right now :)
Funny, I was just looking at enviromesh this morning and wondering if it's worth the investment. I'm on my first proper year and last time I tried to grow a cabbage, all I got was the "net curtain" of all the leaf veins. The cabbage white caterpillars ate everything else! My broccoli attempts were equally pitiful for the same reason, so I know I need to do SOMETHING about the butterflies.
ReplyDeleteI went 3 years of trying different things, to no joy. I would recommend enviromesh to anyone, i bought bigger than i needed a cut to cover two beds and i reckon i will see many years use out of it as long as I tidy it up properly
